In 2026, hiring in India's tech industry slowed down a lot. Basic coding and testing jobs — the kind of jobs many freshers used to get — dropped by as much as 25%, according to a Nasscom-linked report. At the same time, Nasscom says AI-related jobs in India will cross 1 million this year.
Same industry. Same year. Two very different stories.
So, is AI a good career in India? That's actually the wrong question to start with. "AI" is not one job. It's really two different jobs that people lump together under one name. Before we answer the real question, we need to get clear on what we're even talking about.
What Do We Actually Mean by "A Career in AI"?
A "job in AI" is really two different jobs. And right now, they are moving in opposite directions.

A career that passes only one test is not a good career — it's a risky one. Investment banking paid very well in 2007. But it wasn't stable, and many people lost their jobs soon after. A government job is stable, but the pay barely grows. So the real question is not "does AI pay well?" The real question is: does an AI career pass all four tests at once, in India, today?

Test 1: Demand — Passed, easily. India needs many more AI workers every year. A report by Deloitte and Nasscom says AI jobs in India will grow from about 600,000–650,000 today to over 1.25 million by 2027. Nasscom also says AI job demand will cross 1 million by 2026. But here's the catch: only about 16% of IT workers in India currently have AI skills, according to India's IT ministry. So there are far more AI jobs than people who can actually do them. Test 3: Long-term value — Passed, and this is the one people get wrong. Many people think AI is just a passing trend. Nasscom disagrees. They call it "job evolution, not elimination." They estimate AI could add $621 billion to India's economy — about 18% of India's 2023 GDP. That's not a small feature added to one industry. That's AI changing how every industry works. - Learn the basics properly. Math (linear algebra, probability, statistics), Python, and data structures are not optional extras. They're what separates someone who can actually fix a broken AI model from someone who can only type prompts into one.
- Choose one specialty by your second or third year. This could be computer vision, NLP, GenAI, or MLOps. Don't stay a generalist forever — the extra 20–40% pay comes from specializing, not from knowing a little of everything.
- Build real proof of your skills, not just a certificate. Do a paid internship. Build a real final-year project. Contribute to open-source projects. Build a portfolio a recruiter can actually click through. This is how you become one of the people who fills those empty AI jobs, instead of one of the many who get rejected.
